how-to: mycomments feed myblog
As part of the evolution of the mycomment blogging discussions started by Mike L, here is a quick how-to post your comments on other blogs, back to your own site, using an rss feed of:
del.icio.us/YOURNAME/mycomments
(scroll down on this page, in sidebar on the rt to see what that looks like, a dynamic blogroll of blogs you’re commenting on, and your comments).
There are probably more elegant ways to do this, but here’s how I did it:
-create del.icio.us tag mycomments
-whenever you comment on someone else’s blog, post it to del.icio.us and tag it mycomments … cut&paste a bit of it into “extended” field if you want some of the content to come up on your page in the rss feed you create
-to generate javascript of your rss feed goto rss-to-javascrip
-in the URL box put “http://del.icio.us/rss/YOURNAME/mycomments”
-if you want to show content, click “yes” to “show descriptions”
-generate javascript
-now post the script into your blog twemplate, in the sidebar section and voila, you have your comments elsewhere appearing on your own blog.
To refine the hack, you can tag all your comments mycomments, and the ones you want to post to your site mycomments + public.
Also, if you would like to help keep track of the spread of this tool, salp a commentblogger delicious tag on any blogs (including your own) that do this.
also props must go out to fling93 for being the first known species of mycomment poster found in the del.icio.us habitat.

Cool, Hugh. I’m will eventually move to mycomments+public. It took me about 4 weeks of deliciousing my comments to figure out that, although I don’t mind if all of them are public, I might not want to show all of them on my blog.
And instead of moving them up the sidebar, it might look good to put them on the other side. They do take up a whack of space.

yeah i’m limiting to 5 posts only … this is a prob with some blogs - even with design usability, i’m seeing on my humble space an overload of info … may need to pare some things down, or add an extra page for misc stuff & lists.
anyway … wonder if we can track how many people are doing the mycomments sidebar thing by April 5!
Comment by hugh — January 5, 2005 @ 11:51 am
I think we should try and make the term “commentblogging” stick. Whatcha think?
Comment by mtl3p — January 5, 2005 @ 1:19 pm
and instead of having people email you to let you know that they’re doing it, just tell them to delicious their blog with the tag “commentblogger”. Much more open.
Comment by mtl3p — January 5, 2005 @ 1:21 pm
Let’s see where this goes

If your delicious links are in the sidebar (I’m assuming that these links are from the general url delicious/your name) won’t the my comments posts appear twice, “once in delicious links” and again in “my comments elsewhere”
Comment by John Tropea — February 11, 2005 @ 12:35 am
Also how could you have a sidebar link that says “recent trackbacks” and another one as “recent comments(in this blog)”
Comment by John Tropea — February 11, 2005 @ 12:39 am
john,
-for del.icio.us bookmarks i want in my sidebar, i tag them “sidebar,” so the rss feed is: http://del.icio.us/rss/USERNAME/sidebar
-for mycomments I want in my sidebar, I tag them “mycomments public,” so feed is:
http://del.icio.us/rss/USERNAME/mycomments+public
-for recent trackbacks I am not sure, since I haven’t fully figured out trackbacks.
-for “recent comments in this blog” … there is an rss feed generated by wordpress/my template (designed by binary bonsai) found under “meta” in my sidebar (yours too, I think). I don’t know how to generate a rss doc if it isn’t already done by someone smarter than me!
good luck.

I’ve made a Greasemonkey user script that makes tagging comments you post on Blogger blogs a snap — just comment as usual, and then click the “Save at Del.icio.us” link that appears next to your comment, once it’s posted. Enjoy! It’s available here: http://ecmanaut.blogspot.com/2005_11_14_ecmanaut_archive.html
