more nietzsche, “amor fati”
sen no sen’s comments on my nietzsche & blogging post reminded me of two nietszche quotations, which I have hunted down. They are culled from a great book, The Other Nietzsche by Joan Stambaugh. Here they are, obey them!
Whoever gets the highest feeling from striving, the him strive; whoever gets the highest feeling from peace, let him rest; whoever gets the highest feeling from adaptation, following, obedience, let him obey. Only let him become aware of what gives him the highest feeling and not shun any means! Eternity is at stake!

My formula for greatness in man is amor fati: that one wants nothing different, neither forwards nor backwards for all eternity. Not just to bear what is necessary, still less conceal it–all idealism is falsehood in the face of necessity–but love it.

I love that! Eternity is at stake. Makes you think about what you do with your life, doesn’t it?

Thanks for these two potent passages. The force of his words is really quite uncanny!
I’m highly motivated to read him again. Although it is quite daunting, even after many years here now, perhaps I should give it a go in the original German.
I’ll let you know how I fare.
