open da night fire

OK, I seem to be getting a bit off-topic of late, but here is a news story near and dear to my heart. A Montreal institution, Café Olympico, aka Open Da Night, burned down recently. It was a somewhat dangerous vortex (an geotechnical anomaly under the coner of St-Viateur and Waverly results in higher than average gravitational pull, and significantly increased magnetic activity, posing risks especially to those who work from home); but they made a mean coffee, Vito always knew what you wanted, and if you had to meet someone for a serious discussion about Tolstoy, or Murakami, or free software, or imporvisational jazz and experimental documentaries, well, it was the place to go. Also not bad for watching world cup soccer. I used to live just around the corner, and was known to sip on the occasional caffeine-infused beverage there.

Anyway, the place burned down, while I was in Chisasibi: I learned about it while I was up there from mehdi’s blog, just sort of by accident; he’s got some pics of the sad day.

I suspect they’ll open again, but those posters of the 1982 Italian soccer team (world cup champs) are all, I am sure, gone.
