libraries and free/open source software
I’ll be participating tonight is a discussion on Libraries and F/OSS, organized by Cogiateurs Agitateurs, a local group of thinkers and agitators (!). An outline of the discussion (in French) can be found here.
I’ll be participating on behalf of the Atwater Library, a soon-to-be exciting organization where I sit on the board of directors. Also expected in attendance: Danielle Dennie, the force behind LbrarianActivist.org; Mike from IleSansFil, someone from the multi-gazillion dollar Bibliotheque Nationale du Québec, and the cogiateur himself, Robin Milette.
I’m not sure yet what I’m going to talk about, but depending on what everyone else says, I’ll talk about how libraries should be at the forefront of battle to bring free information to citizens - how they should be taking a proactive role, and embracing F/OSS is one way to do that. Come along if you like:
Thurs, January 20th, 18h00, at the CRIM, 550 Sherbrooke West, office 100, Montreal.

Re: backing up a Blogsome blog, the best solution I’ve found so far is to go to the yearly archives (http://USERNAME.blogsome.com/2005/) and save that uberlong page to the hard drive. It’s inelegant and doesn’t include comments, but it’s all I’ve got so far. A real backup/restore plugin would be better.

Thought this might be of interest to you:
Libraries get hip to RSS
Listen to the audio file on that page. Pretty interesting… Could it be of us at your library?

hey danielle … we’re planning to add rss feeds at the atwater site (new site to come online prob next month, all developed with F/OSS drupal.org), but I don’t know how sophisitcated our rss features will be and what kind of link we’ll be able to make to our catalogue. One thing for sure, we’ll be using F/OSS for this … and if we can throw some code back to the world, it’ll be great. If we manage to get ourselves set up as a Koha test site that might be one of the financed objectives (?).

Hey Hugh,
Sorry I didn’t come to the conference. In my enthusiasm I forgot that I had a class 6-8 on thursdays. I was expecting to tell you (and to talk about bibliosansfil) at the lunch, but missed you.
I look forward to hearing about what it was like soon.
