free your computer at the atwater library

I’ve been spending a fair amount of time recently in my role as a board member of the atwater library and computer centre in Montreal; I am trying to help breathe some innovation into the computer centre part, with a focus on social technology and free/open source software. Though I can’t bring any innovation myself, I am trying to get people who can involved, such as Montreal’s free software guru Sylvain Carle and his company interstructure, Montreal’s free software group, FACiL, the cool goings-on at the community wifi group ilesansfil (through mike), the thinking and acting anarchists at Cogitateurs Agitateurs, among others (if you’re interested in “joining” the project let me know - joining can be as little or as much as you would like).

Anyway, the first official event of Atwater’s new life as a cool computer place will happen on Monday Feb 21, at 7pm. Info below:

  4. Open Stacks has another podcast out. At the beginning he talks about how a library could use podcasts. One of the things he suggests was to record seminars, presentations, etc. that go on at the library and then put it on the library website as an mp3 so that people could download it (or put it in a blog and make it “podcastable”). Would this be feasible for the seminar at atwater?

  5. Awesome stuff Hugh. I won’t be able to make that session, but I’ll definitely have to check out the computing centre there at Atwater….

  7. hey danielle, talk about meme or zietgeist or collective unconscious. I thought yesterday to myself, why not record these sessions? and podcast-em? and then I had coffee with oana who organizes the atwater poetry project and she said… why don’t we record the sessions and sell a CD at the end of the yr as a fund raiser? to which I replied, why don’t we do that AND podcast’em AND see if CKUT wants to record & broadcast?

So YES! we plan (vaguely at the moment) to podcast the session, or an edited version of it!

  9. Sounds great, I hope to attend even though I’m already fairly familiar with open source. I’d love to see more libraries doing stuff like this.

Your blog looks just like mine ;)

  10. hey lambic, hope you can make it - actually ideal situation is to have half the room filled with people who know about & use free software, and the other half who don’t - the objective is a big exchange of info and community learning etc …all to help those that don,t know about F/OSS get at it. so geeks and non-geeks are welcome!
