free your computer!

This is a repost, and a request to anyone in Montreal to please spread the word. The Atwater Library, along with FACiL, are presenting a seminar on Free and Open Source Software, Monday Feb 21 at 7pm, 1200 Atwater (just below ste-catherine)… The idea is to try to get a room full of regular joes, along with some hackers and talk about why you should use F/OSS, and what easy tools/software are available. I’m going to introduce the thing (which should be a monthly series, more on that later), Sylvain will be talking about the technology philosophy & history of F/OSS, Cogitateurs/Agitateurs
should be giving a bit of a talk on wider social implications, and then Dan and Sylvain will share the task of doing a few quick tutorials on some software. It should be interactive - so we hope lots of questions etc. I think (hope!) Omar from Koumbit is going to record, and we’ll podcast later.

So once again, any Mtl bloggers out there, pls spread the word, especially to your non-hacker friends.

More info can be found here.
Which is the same as the info below:

  4. I enjoyed the presentation and was disappointed to have to leave before the end. I hope my small contributions were useful (I was the guy with long hair and british accent ;)).

One suggestion I might make for future presentations is to cut back on the Microsoft bashing a little. I know it’s easy to do and sometimes hard to avoid, but it could alienate some people.

  5. hey thanks for coming! yeah, it’s hard to get a room full of free software fanatics and not see some eggs thrown at MS! you are right though, as with all “activism” the objective should be to stick to the facts, and keep the snark out, otherwise you end up talking to your friends who aloready agree. but i thought in general it was less evangelical than some presentations I’ve heard … I hope hitting a decent level for the crowd that was there.
