good analysis

From Matthew Good, re: copyright, and corporate media/record companies in Canada:

The most important realization that any Canadian can make about this country’s music industry is that it is almost entirely beholden to foreign parent companies. Now, many of you might be labouring under the false assumption that the primary concern of Canada’s foremost corporate music giants is the promotion and support of domestic artists, but nothing could be further from the truth. Canadian companies exhaust the majority of their energies promoting large international acts, basically acting as little more than regional sales offices. Below those concerns is found whatever investment remains in Canadian music, an investment that over the last decade has rapidly declined. 1. He totally outed this pol taking money to create a ‘crazy US-style music industry’ which is kind of amusing because if anyone could run a shell legal system without losing money, it’s Canada. I mean, by all means let these people drop money on Saskatchewan or wherever, just 1) don’t let it bother anyone else, 2) none of that -binding- legal decision stuff, see (1), and 3) feminist notions floating tenatively here in Kansas suggest you refer to the female candidate ‘whitewashing’ or ’slurping up’ corporate donations rather than ‘hoovering.’

Mind, that doesn’t clear up how musicians are lumping it in Canada v. the US, Shanghai Club or R.O.W. but Chris probably says somewhere in that blog of his. I just have to deprogram one of my US brains from thinking that it’s legislative work that has to be done….

  2. This is only loosely related but did you notice that the Liberals are now saying that the Tories are violating copyright with their ads?
