a quick list of Montrealers doing stuff
UPDATE: if you’ve got a project on the go, send me an email at hugh AT dosemagazine DOT com or comment here & I’ll add you to the list below.
Julien’s bitchin’ cause Montrealers aren’t talking up their projects, I think, or because we don’t have a more “official” community of geeks. (Not sure what the advantage is to that). I think the main thing is we have no fluoride in our water, so we’re less prone to zombie-like following. There’s tons of cool stuff going on, here is just a list of people I know personally who are doing great things, in no particular order:
- Brett Gaylor, vlogger making a movie about creative commons and remix culture
- Mike Lenczner, free wifi implementer, civic data guy, and location-based portal person…
- Julien Smith, Canada’s most popular independent podcaster
- MC Turgeon, Canada’s most famous podcaster
- Sylvain Carle, semi-pro blogger, open source guy, and almost-launched start-up worker-oner
- Austin Hill, dot-com dinosaur and soon-to-be newly-minted 2.0 fellow
- Patrick Tanguay, (yul)blog evangelist, CSS wizard, and soon-to-be-publicized project partner of mine
- Paul Shore, indie news pioneer, political get-active-ist, and film-maker
- Evan Prodromou, puttin the wiki back into wikitravel
- Boris and Jeremy, bringing international blogging and news together
- craig, shining an eye on media errors and corrections.
- AJ Kandy’s transcribing podcasts.
- Casey and Rudy who are Canada’s best-known videobloggers
UPDATES (I don’t necessarily know these folks):
There are many more, some of whom I know and forgot to mention; others I don’t even know. So, for my money anyway, there’s no lack of activity here, and I seem to run into people doing interesting stuff all the time.

Montreal, action !
Why are all my recent posts about Montreal? Did I mention I never left for Rawdon as planned back in december?
Julien gets the ball rolling in his latest post about Google moving to Montreal (mentionned here) and looking to hire 200-300 new geeks. A bu…

There is no lack of Montreal-based project, but, you know Julien… always bitching… so… ;-)

I think there’s something to be said about our interest in marketing… that’s Julien’s beef, I think, we aren’t big on chest-thumping, and that means you have to be “in” to know what people are doing… it’s easy to get “in” tho, but still … the general population, and the world at large are not so interested.

Chest thumping is part of it. Community is also part of it. We do gain from growing the community for lots of reasons - find partners to work on stuff, brainstorm ideas, network (who knows who I know or someone knows that might be of value to someone else), etc.
Closer-knit communities benefit because they help each other out more than we do right now as Montrealers.
Go to the upcoming BarCamps and DemoCamps btw…

the barcamp folks need to activate that site… right now it seems to be a placeholder.

mir: it’s a list of people I know… not an exhaustive list. if you want me to know more women doing interesting things, then, please, introduce me.

Hugh: What page are you looking at? The pages that I know about (DemoCampMontreal1,DemoCampMontreal2,BarCampMontreal2) are definitely not placeholders…
Besides, what do you mean the “barcamp folks”? You, my friend, are one of the barcamp folks! ;-)
