daily monster

A while back I posted about this great white-board art vid. In the same vein, here’s a blog with a daily monster, video of it’s birth from pen to page. I think you are supposed to write a story about the monster too, in the comments section.

flickr and chinchillas

I am participating in nanowrimo (where people write a whole novel during the month of november) … but I am doing it as a collaborative effort (not sure if you can see that doc without a login), with LibriVox people. A different person writes a new chapter every day, and the next person has to build on the story taking into account what has come previously.

The novel has a recurring joke, where the narrator talks about his “chinchilla of suspicion” to signify a mystery he senses but cannot quite put his finger on.

This evening, I was searching flickr for a picture with tags “whisper” and “ear” for a project… and then I saw this photo:

flickr chinchilla

(pic by luce_beaulieu)

I thought ha ha… how interesting is that!… there is a chinchilla in my photo search. what a coincidence! Then I click on the photo and I think: hey! the first tag is “Montreal”. Now that’s pretty coincidental too. And then I look at the photo, and I say, holy smokes, that’s *Patrick* in the background! Patrick is the guy with whom I am working on the project for which I was searching for a photo tagged “whisper” and “ear.”

You kinda had to be there, but it was pretty weird…

tetes a claques

The best independent media production I have yet seen on the internet.
Têtes à claques: Le Willi Waller.

(If you don’t speak French, it might not make any sense at all; if you speak French but not Québecois, you might still have some troubles.)

librivox noise

One of the great things about LibriVox compared with professional audiobook recordings is the everyday sounds that creep onto our files. The rough-around-the-edges recordings are, I feel, something very important, I don’t know why. I *like* the coughs, the funny breathing, the sounds of trucks and doorbells and who knows what else. Stephan, a very busy LV volunteer from Germany, has put together a “best of” compilation: The Noises of LibriVox.

church of texas holdem

I’m not much of a gambler, and I curse the online bastards everytime they dump me with spam, but a friend, fellow-unpublished-author, and rugby mate Ashley Cotter-Cairns, the only professional online gambler I know, has just launched a irreverent gambling advice site with a religious bent: get your gambling sin served up with some cleansing holy scripture here: Church of Texas Holdem.

dose is dead! long live dose!

ha! my doppleganger, at least the print version, has come and gone. good news as far as I am concerned, but CanWest will continue to pour money into dose.ca, their web “presence.” I hope their funding will pay for a decent design, I can’t get over how crappy-looking the site is. It’s ridiculous. It gives the *real* dose (this one) a bad name, like when someone once said, oh I thought you were from CanWest’s dosemagazine, grimmacing like they had just eaten an unripe lemon soaked in moonshine. Oh no, no, I said, blushing, I was dose waaaay before those bozos. See here for some proof. And here, too.

That being said, I must say that I take the exact same approach to life as some of the people at CanWest, as is evidenced by this charming quote, which I could well have said myself, in fact I think I was just saying these exact words a few days ago about *this* dose:

“Going forward, we plan to keep the best elements of Dose and weave theseinto our web, mobile and general content strategies…The internet is clearly a key medium in reaching the 18-34 year old demo and dose.ca has developed very strong brand awareness with this group which will be beneficial for advertisers and for the overall network. And by leveraging our other key media assets throughout the country, we will be able to continue to provide our advertising clients with creative, integrated solutions.”

More or less. I, also, am definitely geared to the 18-34 year old demo. Bring em on.

the internet can be fun

Rick Mercer, the somewhat fallen genius behind 22 minutes & made in canada, and now the not-quite-so-funny rick mercer report, has a blog & has asked for photoshopped pics of our fearless leaders. This one by M. MacPherson is my favourite, mainly because of the title (I like mustard), which to me seems to say so much about the sorry state of the political landscape in Canada:

I like mustard: by Matthew MacPherson

I must say I like this one too, for some reason, (This party is off the hook, by Guy Incognito):

get your ipod off my subway map

The world is crazy. The NY MTA, and San Fran’s BART, both public transport corporations (ie government–that is for the people–owned) have sent cease-and-desist letters to ipodsubwaymaps.com for copyright infringement (the pirates are providing subway maps for your ipod!).

MTA & BART are wankers.

Aren’t all govt docs in the public domain? Maybe just fed docs, but still.
